How to Reduce Packaging Damage During Transportation
Most transit damage is caused by how a load is built and secured, not by the box itself. Practical fixes for pallet pattern, strapping, stacking and monsoon exposure.
When boxes arrive crushed, torn or wet, the box specification is usually blamed first, but our experience across hundreds of Chennai despatches is that the load-building and transport practice is the more frequent cause. A correctly specified box can still fail if it is loaded, stacked or exposed incorrectly.
The measures below address the transport stage specifically, separate from the box specification itself.
Pallet pattern and overhang
Boxes stacked with edges overhanging the pallet lose support at exactly the point where corrugated board is weakest against a point load. Interlocking pallet patterns that keep every box edge within the pallet footprint distribute weight evenly and reduce crushing at the base of a stack.
Strapping and stretch wrap
- Use edge protectors under strapping to prevent the strap cutting into box corners
- Apply stretch wrap in overlapping passes from base to top, not a single loose pass
- Avoid over-tightening stretch wrap on lightweight boxes, which can itself crush the top layer
- Re-check strap tension if a load is held in a yard for more than a day before dispatch
Load stability and mixed-load stacking
Heavier below, lighter above
Mixed loads should always place heavier, more rigid cartons at the base and progressively lighter ones on top. A single heavy pallet placed on lighter cartons is one of the most common causes of crush damage seen on arrival.
LTL versus FTL considerations
Less-than-truckload shipments are handled and re-stacked more times than full-truckload shipments, and often share space with unrelated cargo that may be stacked without regard to your load. Where LTL is unavoidable, specify a higher edge crush value than you would for a dedicated FTL movement, and mark cartons clearly with stacking orientation and maximum stack height.
Monsoon protection
Chennai's monsoon months bring a real risk of water exposure during loading, in transit yards, and at open unloading docks. Use water-resistant board treatment where the route includes open-air handling, cover loads with tarpaulin during transfer, and avoid keeping loaded vehicles standing uncovered during heavy rain.
