Corrugated Packaging for Auto Components and Engineering Parts

Auto components bring weight, oil and sharp geometry that standard cartons cannot handle. Here is what changes for tier-1 and engineering supply.

Auto components and engineering parts break corrugated boxes in a way that finished consumer goods rarely do. The weight is often concentrated on a small footprint, the edges are metal and unforgiving, and many parts carry a film of cutting oil or grease that ordinary board cannot tolerate. Packaging for this sector starts from the load, not from a standard box size.

Weight and load concentration

A gearbox housing or a set of forged brackets does not distribute its weight evenly across a carton base the way a carton of stacked cartons does. The board needs to resist puncture and localised crushing at the contact points, which is why edge crush test values matter more here than bursting strength alone.

5-ply and 7-ply construction

Standard single or double-wall board is rarely adequate for engineering components above a few kilograms. Five-ply and seven-ply corrugated board, sometimes combined with wooden pallet bases, is the usual specification once component weight and stacking height increase.

Partitions, layer pads and oil-bearing parts

Partitions keep individual components from grinding against each other during transit, and layer pads separate stacked tiers so weight is carried by the board structure rather than by the parts below. Where components carry residual cutting oil or grease, oil-resistant liners prevent that oil from weakening the board fibres from the inside.

Returnable multi-trip packs and bin integration

Many auto component supply chains use returnable corrugated bins that make several round trips between supplier and assembly line before replacement. These need heavier board, reinforced flaps and dimensions that match existing pallet and bin systems exactly, since a mismatch disrupts warehouse racking and line-side stacking.

  • Match returnable pack dimensions to existing bin or rack systems
  • Specify oil-resistant treatment for any part with residual lubricant
  • Agree a re-use cycle count with the supplier for returnable packaging

Tier-1 supply requirements

Tier-1 suppliers to OEMs typically work to documented packaging specifications that cover dimensions, labelling, barcoding and sometimes specific board grades. A packaging supplier used to this sector should be able to work from those specifications directly rather than treating each order as a fresh design exercise.
