How Humidity Affects Corrugated Boxes in Chennai and Coastal India
Coastal humidity and monsoon storage quietly weaken corrugated board. Here is what happens physically, and how to design and store around it.
Corrugated board is made from paper, and paper is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. In Chennai and along the Tamil Nadu coast, relative humidity regularly sits well above the levels most board is tested at, and the monsoon months push it higher still inside poorly ventilated godowns.
The effect is not cosmetic. Moisture uptake softens the fibres in the fluting and liners, and the box loses compression strength well before it looks visibly damp. A carton that passed its edge crush test in a dry lab can lose a significant share of its stacking strength after a few humid days in storage.
What humidity actually does to the board
Designing around coastal conditions
The starting point is to specify for the humidity you actually store and ship in, not for a laboratory average. Moisture-resistant liners and treated papers hold their bonding strength for longer in damp air, and a wax or polymer treatment on the outer liner can shed direct moisture without making the carton unrecyclable, provided the treatment is applied correctly and in the right quantity. Ask your supplier specifically whether the liner grade they propose is rated for high-humidity storage — this is not the same question as asking for a heavier GSM, which adds cost without necessarily addressing moisture resistance.
Warehouse practice matters as much as the box
- Store cartons on pallets, never directly on a concrete or bare floor
- Keep stock away from external walls where condensation collects
- Ventilate or dehumidify godowns during monsoon months
- Avoid storing packed cartons near open loading bay doors
- Use stock within a reasonable period rather than holding it long-term
Conditioning before use
If cartons have been stored in a different environment to where they will be packed, allow them to acclimatise to the packing area's temperature and humidity before use — this reduces the risk of moisture-related flexing during erection and stitching.
