A crushed box on arrival almost always has a single traceable cause, even though it looks like general wear and tear. Before you change your supplier or your board grade, walk through the checks below — most crushing problems trace back to one of these seven factors, and most are fixable without redesigning the carton.
Treat this as a diagnostic sequence rather than a list to skim. Match what you are seeing in the warehouse to the symptom column first, then confirm the cause before you spend money on a heavier board.

Specification is the starting point, not the finish line
A box specified correctly for edge crush and bursting strength can still fail if it spends three weeks in a monsoon-damp godown or is stacked eight pallets high in a warehouse designed for four. Strength figures on a test certificate assume dry, controlled conditions and a defined stacking pattern — change either and the safety margin disappears quickly.

- Photograph the damage pattern before repacking or discarding stock
- Check the stack height and duration in your own warehouse first
- Ask your supplier for the box's edge crush test and bursting strength values
- Measure ambient humidity where cartons are stored
- Review pallet size against carton footprint
