How to Choose Packaging for Heavy Industrial Components

Heavy industrial parts need more than a thicker box. Load concentration, sharp edges and handling all change the specification.

Heavy industrial components — machined castings, gearboxes, fabricated brackets, motor housings — behave differently inside a carton than lighter, evenly distributed goods. The failure mode is rarely the whole box collapsing; it is usually localised, where a sharp edge or a concentrated point load works through the board from the inside.

A heavier board alone does not solve this. The specification needs to address where the load sits, how it moves in transit and what the component's surface can do to the carton and to itself.

Deciding between a heavy-duty carton and a crate

Not every heavy component needs wooden crating. A well-specified 7-ply corrugated case with partitions and a reinforced base can replace a crate for many industrial parts, at lower weight and cost, and without the export documentation that solid wood packaging requires under ISPM 15. The deciding factors are unit weight, whether the load is concentrated or distributed, and how many times the pack is likely to be handled before it reaches the end user.

Identify contact points and sharp edges
Choose ply and wall construction
Add partitions, cushioning and corner protection
Confirm palletisation and handling method

Handling aids reduce damage as much as the box does

Hand-holds, forklift entry points and clear this-side-up markings reduce mishandling of heavy packs as much as any change to the board itself.
